Burgundy

Burgundy or Bourgogne is a prestigious wine region in France, famous for its exceptional red and white wines. The region is best known for:

  • Red Wines: Made primarily from Pinot Noir, Burgundy reds are elegant, fruity, and complex, with earthy and floral notes. The finest examples come from the areas of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.

  • White WinesChardonnay is the key grape, producing wines ranging from crisp and mineral (like Chablis) to richer, buttery styles (like Meursault).  Generally the more southerly vineyards of the Côte de Beaune is where the majority of high quality white comes from, but rising in importance all the time are the vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâcon regions, where often the wines are relatively accessible in price.

Burgundy’s unique terroir and small, fragmented vineyards contribute to the region's high-quality, often expensive wines. Key sub-regions include Chablis (for dry minerally styles of dry white) and Beaujolais (for light fruity reds from Gamay). Burgundy wines emphasise quality and reflect the distinct characteristics of each vineyard.
