Bordeaux

Bordeaux wines flow from the heart of southwestern France's Bordeaux region, a place that's earned its spot among the world's most celebrated wine-making areas. While Bordeaux has made its name with outstanding red wines - typically crafted by blending different grape varieties - it also produces remarkable white wines.

Red Bordeaux Wines:

The stars of Bordeaux reds are:

  • Merlot: Think smooth and fruity with a gentle touch. You'll find it ruling the Right Bank, especially in places like Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: This grape brings the backbone - strong tannins and amazing aging potential. It's the king of the Left Bank, showing up big in Médoc, Pauillac, and Margaux.

  • Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec join the blend as supporting actors, each adding their own special touch of complexity and depth.

When you sip a Bordeaux red, you might catch hints of dark fruits like blackberry and blackcurrant, mixed with subtle herbs and spices. Some are friendly and approachable right away, while others need time to show their best side.

White Bordeaux Wines:

The white wines of Bordeaux usually bring together:

  • Sauvignon Blanc: Brings zesty citrus notes and fresh grass-like flavours.

  • Sémillon: Adds a rich, round feeling with lovely honey touches.

  • Muscadelle: Sprinkles in some aromatic magic, though just a bit.

These whites come in two main styles: dry ones (like those from Graves) and sweet ones (think Sauternes and Barsac). The sweet versions are famous for their rich, honey-like character and fruit flavours, often thanks to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) working its magic on the grapes.

Bordeaux Wine Regions:

  • Left Bank: Home to Médoc and Graves, where Cabernet Sauvignon shines brightest.

  • Right Bank: Where Pomerol and Saint-Émilion showcase the best of Merlot.

  • Sauternes and Barsac: The sweet spots where some of the world's finest dessert wines are born.

What makes Bordeaux wines special is how everything comes together - their balance, structure, and ability to get better with age. No wonder they're treasured by wine lovers and collectors worldwide.
